How to use Polymarket in South Africa: rand to USDC and back
Polymarket works in South Africa with no known restriction. Buy USDC with rand on Luno, VALR or Binance, send it over Polygon, reverse it to withdraw.
Polymarket is not available in your country. You will only find information here, not sign-up links.
Is Polymarket available in South Africa?
Yes. South Africa is not on Polymarket’s official geoblocking list and there is no known local block. Polymarket does not accept rand, so you need USDC. Buy it on a South African or global exchange, send it over the Polygon network to your Polymarket deposit address, and when you want rand back, return the USDC to the exchange and sell it.
Is Polymarket legal in South Africa?
What can be said is limited: Polymarket does not restrict South Africa and no local block is known. There is no ruling on record specifically about prediction markets, and this guide does not go beyond that. The South Africa page is where any change will be reflected.
Step 1: buy USDC with rand
These are the exchanges most used in South Africa for USDC:
| Exchange | What you use it for |
|---|---|
| Luno | Buying USDC with rand |
| VALR | Buying USDC with rand |
| Binance | Buying USDC through its available methods |
- Register and complete the verification the exchange requires.
- Fund your account in ZAR using one of its methods.
- Buy USDC, a stablecoin worth 1 US dollar.
Buy, sell and withdrawal fees are set by each exchange and listed on its site. Compare them before you choose, because they are the biggest cost on this route.
Step 2: deposit USDC on Polymarket over Polygon
- On Polymarket, open Deposit and copy your EVM deposit address. It is unique to your wallet and that network type.
- On the exchange, choose Withdraw for USDC and select the Polygon network. If Polygon is not offered, use another network that Polymarket’s deposit screen lists as supported, and choose the same network on both sides.
- Check the minimum on the deposit screen. It changes, so read it each time.
- Confirm. Polymarket converts the USDC to pUSD, its internal stablecoin, automatically.
An unsupported token or the wrong network can cause an unrecoverable loss. recovery.polymarket.com is there to try to recover mistaken transfers, but it cannot promise results. Every screen is covered in how to deposit on Polymarket.
You will also see a card deposit option, run by an external processor with its own fees, and a Coinbase connection.
Step 3: withdraw from Polymarket to rand
- Choose Withdraw on Polymarket. Your pUSD is converted into native USDC through a Uniswap pool on Polygon.
- Paste your USDC deposit address from Luno, VALR or Binance and select the same network.
- On the exchange, sell the USDC for rand and transfer it to your bank with that exchange’s methods and timelines.
The official withdrawal docs add a few points:
- Polymarket charges no withdrawal fee.
- Withdrawals are instant unless the Uniswap pool is depleted. If so, they can be delayed or fail; split the amount or wait.
- You can withdraw pUSD as is, but some exchanges do not accept pUSD deposits. For a South African exchange, withdraw as USDC.
- For very large withdrawals (over 50,000 USD), Polymarket recommends splitting them or using a third-party bridge.
The real costs
| Item | Who charges | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | Polymarket | No fee |
| Withdrawal | Polymarket | No fee |
| Maker trades | Polymarket | No fee |
| Taker trades | Polymarket | Category rate from 0 to 0.07 |
| Buying and selling USDC | Luno, VALR or Binance | Exchange’s published rate |
| Withdrawing USDC from the exchange | The exchange | Exchange’s published rate |
| Polygon network | The network | Cents; usually paid by the exchange |
The taker fee formula and examples are in the fees guide. On tax, the general principle holds: if you make a profit, ask an accountant how to declare it.
Look before you deposit
Polymarket prices read as probabilities. If that is new, start with what Polymarket is and the markets board, which shows live markets without an account.
