A brand-new gambling law
The Dominican Republic overhauled its gambling rules in September 2026. Law 86-26, dated 22 September, governs the licensing, inspection and supervision of both in-person and online betting, and creates the Dirección General de Juegos de Azar (DGJA) under the Ministry of Finance and Economy, replacing the old casinos directorate. Decree 684-26 appointed Teófilo Quico Tabar as interim director.
The DGJA has not yet said whether prediction markets fall within its remit. Because the law is so recent, this is the page in the region most likely to change.
The central bank and the tax office
Since 2017 the central bank has held that virtual assets have no legal tender status and that regulated financial institutions may not handle them within the payments system. The tax authority (DGII), answering a September 2024 query about fees collected in crypto, said that once converted into money they are taxable income as an increase in net worth. It was not written for Polymarket users, but it shows how the tax office thinks.
Dominican pesos and local markets
For Dominican pesos, Binance P2P showed a single USDC offer on 25 October 2026; USDT offers were far more plentiful and were paid through Banreservas, Banco Popular, BHD and Qik.
